Response to Minister K. Shanmugam’s Remarks on Racial and Religious Harmony
The General Council of the Assemblies of God (AG) Singapore affirms the recent remarks by Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs, Mr K. Shanmugam, on the non-negotiable importance of racial and religious harmony, and on the condemnation of all acts of hostility and anti-Semitism in Singapore.
Commitment to Core National Principles
The Assemblies of God Singapore stands resolute in its commitment to the nation’s core principles of mutual respect and religious tolerance. We recognise that this peace is the bedrock of Singapore’s prosperity, and every community—including the Christian community—bears a solemn responsibility to nurture and guard it actively.
Unequivocal Condemnation of Religious Hostility
We support the Government’s firm stance that acts of anti-Semitism will not be tolerated in our country. We are deeply concerned about the recent reports of hostile incidents.
• The AG Singapore rejects any form of discrimination, harassment, or violence directed at individuals based on their race, religion, or the visible markers of their faith.
• We affirm that followers of any faith must be free to practice their religion, feel safe, and be protected from discrimination and harassment.
Our Call to the AG Community and Conclusion
Consistent with our biblical mandate to seek the peace and welfare of the city, we call upon all AG churches, leaders, and members to intensify their commitment to being builders of bridges, not walls, within our multireligious and multi-racial society.
We affirm the Minister’s principle that all Singaporeans, regardless of their feelings towards global conflicts, must feel safe and respected here in Singapore. Our response to international events must never translate into hostility or ill-treatment toward any fellow Singaporean or resident.
As a Pentecostal movement focused on unity and community engagement, the Assemblies of God Singapore will continue to dedicate its efforts to practical service and fostering deep relationships across faith lines, thereby contributing tangibly to the enduring harmony enjoyed in our nation.
